Gibraltar government looking to strengthen Commonwealth links

As Gibraltar looks to its new future outside the European Union (EU), it seems that the British Overseas Territory may be primed to explore new opportunities with other parts of the world – not least the nations that make up the Commonwealth.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia indicated that the Gibraltar government was considering how it could heighten its level of engagement with the Commonwealth and its institutions.

A long history of proud Commonwealth membership

Dr Garcia, who is the minister with responsibility for Gibraltar’s relations with the Commonwealth, made his remarks on the recent Commonwealth Day, which was the first to be held since the territory departed the EU with the United Kingdom.

He said that in such a context, “it is perfectly logical that we should look to increase our level of engagement with the Commonwealth and its institutions going forward.

“Gibraltar has long been a proud member of the wider Commonwealth family.

“Our politicians participate in meetings of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, our sportsmen and women fly our flag in the Commonwealth Games and our young people represent us in the Youth Parliament and Youth Forum.”

Building on key international connections

Dr Garcia said Gibraltar also cooperated with other parts of the Commonwealth, pointing out that the territory had recently joined the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council as a means of targeting opportunities for the business community.

He added that the Gibraltar government was now undertaking a detailed exercise to pinpoint which other Commonwealth organisations would offer benefits to the territory.

“The message this Commonwealth Day has to be that as one door has closed, other doors have opened for Gibraltar.

“We intend to take full advantage of the opportunities that this will offer.”
